24 year old Lishalliny Kanaran was seen on the Miss Grand Malaysia stage showing off her national costume, which consisted of seven mannequins that were decked in blue and gold silk gowns.

The extravagant (and now gone viral!) costume was created by local bridal boutique Aldrin’s Artistry. As seen in the images above, all the mannequins wore headdresses and stood in traditional ulek mayang dance poses whilst Lishalliny donned a black-and-gold traditional Malay costume for men, representing a shaman.

The costume, named the “7 Ancient Princesses of Ulek Mayang,” pays homage to a ritual dance from Terengganu that is believed to have healing powers for fishermen possessed by spirits. Ulek Mayang is a classical Malay dance that originates from Terengganu, Malaysia. It is said to be a ritualistic dance performed to appease or invoke the spirits of the sea and is always accompanied by a unique song also called Ulek Mayang.

As seen in the TikTok video below that’s been making its rounds on social media, Lishalliny can be seen pulling all 7 dolls with her across the stage while competing in the international round of the pageant, held in Bangkok, Thailand.

We wish Lishalliny Kanaran all the best for the finals and to continue making Malaysia proud!
