Goodbye Abusers, Instagram Will Soon Let You Filter Them Out!

You can choose NOT to see certain words, phrases and emojis that you think are inappropriate.

How many times a week on average do you get random messages from strangers that may sound abusive? How many times have you deleted, reported or even blocked their profiles?

Instagram will soon let you filter out abusive messages so you don’t have to deal with them at all. Their new update allows users to hide or delete abusive messages that we receive on our DM ‘requests’ as that’s usually where harassments more likely happen.

This feature works in a similar way to the comment filter, which allows us to hide abusive comments and words we don’t want people to use on our posts.

So, how do you turn it on? Here’s how.

Head to the DM requests filters, go to a new section of your privacy settings called Hidden Words. This feature can be personalised according to what YOU think is okay and what is not. You can create a list of words, phrases or emojis that you want to filter out of DM requests. Once this is done, the messages will be filtered into a separate hidden requests folder.

You can still tap to uncover it, should you wish to delete, report or accept but you won’t be able to see it otherwise.

But take a deep breath, this feature will be rolling out real soon in several countries in the coming weeks and globally in the next few months. Till then, stay safe while you’re online and stay away from abusers.
