Many critics, industry members and fans have deemed the Oscar nod as a turning point for all future movies. 10 years ago, debates were going on about whether a superhero movie could or should be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Now, with Black Panther’s nomination, it looks like things are changing for the better.
The superhero movie has also been nominated in six other categories that include Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Original Song.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, only had one thing to say about the Oscar nod:
“The word that kept coming to me from the moment it happened is just this humbling sense of pride for everyone involved in the movie,” he said.
“It’s the most important recognition that a film can receive in our industry. That’s not lost on any of us. It’s something that’s immensely gratifying. As the numerous phone calls and text messages that went back and forth between all of us who were lucky enough to work on the film [show], it is just… pride,” he added.
The cast of Black Panther were elated by the news and took to social media to share their pride.

Black Panther still has to beat out seven other movies to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. However, the fact that the movie was nominated at all is a defining moment for both superhero movies and the Oscars.
Wakanda forever!
Do you think that Black Panther has a chance to win Best Picture of the year?
