Most of us would be well aware of and have used Microsoft’s OG web browser, Internet Explorer. For most people, their tryst with the internet was probably kick-started through the Internet Explorer.
Although the browser was one of the first commercially available web browsers in the market, over time it became quite outdated. Now, Microsoft is finally putting it to rest after 27 years.
As of June 15, Microsoft will no longer support the once-dominant browser and users will be redirected to Microsoft’s Edge browser instead.
IE's demise was not a surprise. A year ago, Microsoft said that it was putting an end to Internet Explorer on June 15, 2022, pushing users to its Edge browser, which was launched in 2015.
The company made it clear then it was time to move on.
“We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications,” Sean Lyndersay, General Manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise, wrote in a statement, on behalf of the company.
Microsoft Edge will replace Internet explorer, while the retiring browser will go out of support for certain versions of Windows 10. The company encouraged users “to start enjoying a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience" with its Edge browser.
Twitter family went viral with their memes after the news spread, both funny and sad in nature.
Internet Explorer is shutting down in three days. I haven't used IE in a decades but it was the browser I had used for the majority if my childhood.
