To honour the victims of the attack, a nationwide moment of silence was observed in New Zealand on Friday (March 22nd), which was then ushered in by the Muslim call to prayer.

An estimated 20,000 people of all faiths gathered together, just meters away from where the tragedy occurred at the Al Noor mosque, for the prayer and two-minute reflection that was broadcasted live on national media outlets.

“We are brokenhearted, but we are not broken. We are determined to not let anyone divide us,” Imam Gamal Fouda told the crowd that had gathered in support of the victims.

“Today, from the same place, I look out and see the love and compassion in the eyes of thousand fellow New Zealanders and fellow human beings from across the globe,” he said.
