Not too long ago, all toll booths in Malaysia ditched the cash system, which means that unless you have a Touch ‘n Go card or a Smart Tag, you won’t be allowed to pass.

Now, it has been announced that our toll system will be getting another update… a very high-tech one. Introducing, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

According to Sin Chew, this new system will be implemented on our highways beginning 28 January 2018. With RFID, we’ll no longer need to endure long queues at the toll or even slow down our vehicle for detection. And that means there’ll be no more of those “Oops, I left my Smart Tag at home now I’ll have to gostan all the way out” drama too!

In fact, RFID is so cool, it won’t even have a physical toll gate. If you’ve seen Singapore’s electronic toll system, that’s what it’ll be like.

The new system will be introduced in stages. It’s currently being tested at 8 toll plazas in the Klang Valley, but can only be used by police vehicles. Eventually, the service will be extended to everyone else by early 2018, with at least one RFID lane at every toll plaza by 2020.
