Net Disposable Income May Be Used To Determine Aid Eligibility

The government is considering using Net Disposable Income when determining a household's eligibility for financial aid.

The Economy Ministry says this is fairer, because it takes into account how much money households have left after covering essential expenses.

It's currently working with the relevant agencies to study the impact of such a system.

In the meantime, the ministry says Budget 2027 will continue to include measures aimed at easing the burden on middle-income households.

This includes broad-based assistance programmes such as Bantuan Awal Persekolahan and BUDI95.

The Higher Education Minister says this will make it easier for universities to monitor their welfare and safety.

This, as some students arrange their own accommodation without going through their unis, and this makes monitoring more difficult.

Meanwhile, the minister says the government is looking at ways to expand affordable student housing.

This includes offering rent-controlled accommodation near public universities.
