Tournament favourites France have started Euro 2020 on a winning note with a 1-0 victory over Germany in their Group F opener.

The World Cup winners got a lucky break in the 20th minute when German defender Mats Hummels deflected the ball into his own net, after a strike by Lucas Hernandez.

The French could have added to their tally, but Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema had goals ruled out for offside.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is now the European Championship’s record goalscorer.

He netted twice in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary for his 10th and 11th goals overall, overtaking the previous tournament record of nine goals set by Michel Platini.

The win also moves Portugal top of Group F, ahead of France on goal difference.

A Safawi Rasid penalty was enough to give Malaysia a 1-0 win over Thailand in their final World Cup qualifier.

The win ensures that Harimau Malaya finish third in their group.

The national team are already out of the World Cup qualifiers, but their third place was enough to earn them a spot in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifying competition.

Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid have been allowed into next season’s Champions League…despite their recent attempts to join the breakaway European Super League.

The confirmation came from UEFA, after earlier concerns that the three teams could have been kicked out, over the Super League controversy.
