It brings Messi’s tally in the competition over the years to 18, which makes him the tournament’s all-time record goalscorer, surpassing Germany striker Miroslav Klose.
The win over Austria also secures Argentina’s place in the round of 32.
In other results this morning, Kylian Mbappe netted a brace as France overcame Iraq 3-0.
While Erling Haaland was also on the scoresheet in Norway’s 3-2 victory over Senegal.
