Spain Break Portuguese Hearts

Mikel Merino scored an injury-time winner as Spain recorded a 1-0 victory over Portugal at the football festival in North America.

The reigning European champions will next take on Belgium in the quarterfinals, after their 4-1 win over the USA.

Portugal’s defeat also marked the final ever appearance in the tournament for 41-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez has announced that he is stepping down as Portugal head coach, saying the time has come for someone else to take charge.

Croatia are planning to lodge a report with football’s governing body over a disallowed goal in their earlier defeat to Portugal.

The controversy centers on their goal in the dying seconds of the game which was initially given on the field, but later overturned using data housed within the match ball itself, which detected a microscopic touch by a Croatian player that rendered the goal offside.

Croatia argues this level of scrutiny goes against the spirit of VAR as it relies on data that fans and players cannot see in real time.
