RIP No More! Duolingo’s Iconic Owl Returns in Dramatic Fashion

The Owl is back! —sort of. Nearly two weeks after Duolingo stunned the internet by announcing the “death” of its iconic green mascot, Duo the Owl has made an unexpected return.

In an Instagram video, set to the track HE's Back X Gojo [VVV] (VVV) by Sanikwave, Duolingo recapped the events leading up to the owl’s alleged demise before dramatically resurrecting him with the caption: “Heeee’s back!”

As for why he faked his death? Duo had a simple explanation: “Faking my death was the test, and you all passed.”

Naturally, fans wasted no time reacting to the latest twist in Duolingo’s viral marketing saga.

“I’d say you didn’t have to go so hard,” snack brand Cheez-It commented on Instagram, “but you kind of did have to go this hard after coming back from the dead.”

Another follower quipped, “Faking your death just to see if people cared—what an icon.” Duo himself replied, “Just a baddie doing baddie things.”

The resurrection marks the end of a bizarre yet wildly entertaining chapter for the language-learning app, which first sent the internet into chaos on February 11 by declaring its feathery mascot deceased.

"It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead," the company announced on Instagram. "Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know."

One day later, Duolingo shared an animated video revealing Duo’s cause of death: a dramatic collision with a Tesla Cybertruck, which sent him soaring into the afterlife. The brand even offered a “reward” for identifying the mystery driver.

Among those mourning the owl’s sudden departure was Dua Lipa, who posted “Til’ death Duo part” with a broken heart emoji on X (formerly Twitter).

But now, with Duo’s resurrection complete, fans (and Dua) can breathe a sigh of relief. And maybe—just maybe—log in to finally complete that language lesson.
