Acts of Kindness, Employer Funds RM50k Surgery for Employee’s Ailing Father

For most of us, a workplace is simply a place to earn a living. But every so often, we hear stories of extraordinary compassion that transform an employer into a beacon of hope.

For Shareena, her company wasn’t just an employer—it became a lifeline during one of her family’s darkest moments.

In 2018, Shareena’s life took a devastating turn when her father was diagnosed with a tennis ball-sized tumour dangerously close to his brain. Complicating matters further, he also suffered from critical heart problems.

Two surgeries were needed urgently: one for his heart and another to remove the tumour. While the heart procedure was successful, the tumour surgery came with a staggering RM50,000 price tag.

 

 

Without the funds to pay for private treatment and with government hospital wait times stretching up to two years, the family was running out of options.

“We didn’t have that kind of money,” Shareena explained. “Waiting wasn’t an option—he wouldn’t survive that long.”

Her father, despite his failing health, tried to raise the funds through friends and small jobs. But time was slipping away as his condition worsened.

In the midst of their struggle, Shareena remembered her company’s Emergency Relief Fund (ERF). Although her father was hesitant, saying others might need it more, she decided to take the chance and submitted an application.

To her surprise, the company responded promptly, asking for medical reports, bills, and diagnostics.

Within days, Shareena received an email that brought her family a glimmer of hope:

“Hi Shareena,
Your ERF request was reviewed by the ERF council and approved for the full amount requested, i.e., 50,000 MYR.”

For the first time in weeks, the family felt some relief, knowing the surgery could proceed.

With the financial burden lifted, the surgery was scheduled. But in a heartbreaking twist, Shareena’s father didn’t survive the procedure. His heart gave out during the operation.

“But life had other plans. He didn’t make it. I lost him that day,” Shareena wrote.

Amid her grief, Shareena remained deeply grateful for what her company had done for her family.

“They didn’t just give us money. They gave us hope,” she shared. “To my dad: I miss you every day. I hope I’m making you proud. And to the company that helped us: Thank you. You made me believe in kindness again.”
