Teens Swap Smartphones for Flip Phones and See Positive Changes

A group of teenagers in New Jersey decided to switch from smartphones to flip phones for a week, inspired by 14-year-old Ben Cohen-Vigder’s decision to reduce his screen time. Ben, who had been using his smartphone for over five hours a day, found his days became fuller and more productive with a flip phone.

The experiment, involving Ben and three friends, showed surprising results. Maya, who averaged 10+ hours of screen time, noticed better sleep, while Jamison found homework became easier without distractions. Although Carson couldn’t stick with the flip phone, the others shared positive reflections.

Experts warn that excessive screen time can lead to anxiety and depression, with teens spending an average of four or more hours a day on devices. After the experiment, Jamison felt more connected to his family, and Maya’s mom hoped the change would help them both be more mindful of their phone use.

Ben, now almost a year into his flip phone habit, believes in making small changes for a healthier balance between screen time and real-life connections.
